How To Check If A Painter Is Licensed
A paint job after a build or renovation or even just to spruce up your interiors is often what your home needs to feel complete. Professional painters carry the right skills, experience and equipment to give your home's
interior and
exterior a beautiful finish you love. While painters aren't legally required to be licensed, when you hire a painter without qualifications or insurance, you are taking a sizeable risk. You can avoid running into problems by checking if your painter is licensed - read on for our handy how-to tips.
Licensing - when it's required
In New South Wales, a painter must carry a licence if they:
- Carry out any residential building work with a cost greater than $5,000 - including labour and materials
- Advertise their services
- Enter into a contract with their clients
- Hire any subcontractors to help with their work
If your painter does advertise or enter into a contract with you, they'll need to carry a Contractor's Licence.
Licences are issued by the NSW Department of Fair Trading. They're dependent on the painter having completed Certificate III in Painting and Decorating from a recognised educational institution, such as TAFE. When you hire a licensed painter, you know they come with the education and qualifications needed to get the job done.
Checking your painter's licence
There are simple ways you can check if your prospective painter is licensed.
The first and most straightforward way is to ask your painter when considering their services. You have the right to know whether a tradesperson entering your property has the required and desired expertise to complete the job.
Second, you can check the particular licensing register relevant to your state. In NSW, contractor and trade licences are listed through
Service NSW. All you'll need to determine whether your painter holds a valid and current licence is their licensee name, licence number, trade, suburb, ABN or ACN - or a combination of these.
